the way forward

At changing futures we believe that people should have the opportunity to design their services and shape the way they are delivered.

Although there has been progress in developing the ways in which social care is organised, the majority of people who need support are more often than not occupied within specialist, segregated services. For example, day services that focus on the service they provide within the centre. In order to make progress beyond physical integration and make inroads into areas of social integration, services need to think in terms of supporting people in their individual lifestyles.

It is essential that: ·

  • We provide a solid foundation for implementing person led approaches and tackle the issue of social integration
  • There is an awareness of historical aspects of societal responses and the development of service models
  • We have a sense of the current stage of service development and what needs to happen next

People involved in the care and support of other people need to be able to find out, voice, and visualise 'images of possibility' as a starting point for developing honest person led approaches and breaking free of the historical boundaries and limitations of service provision. The nature of relationships between people who need support and those who provide it needs to be reciprocal rather than one way, enabling everyone to be proactive in their contribution to the local and wider community.
